Paediatrics (children) Speech Pathology
Smart Moves Healthcare Speech Pathologists work with paediatric clients to assess, diagnose, and treat a wide range of speech, language, and communication disorders.
Their role is to help children and young people develop effective communication skills, support social interaction, and assist with reading and writing.
Smart Moves Healthcare Speech Pathologists can assist with:
- Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC): Assess, support in obtaining and teach the use of devices or tools (e.g., communication boards or speech-generating devices) for children with severe communication impairments.
- Speech sound disorders: Help children with articulation and phonological disorders, such as difficulty pronouncing certain sounds or words.
- Language development: Support children with delayed language skills, working on vocabulary expansion, grammar, and sentence structure.
- Stuttering: Treat fluency disorders, helping children manage stuttering and develop smoother, more natural speech patterns.
- Social communication: Enhance social language skills, including turn-taking, conversational abilities, and understanding nonverbal cues (e.g., body language, facial expressions).
- Receptive and expressive language: Address challenges with understanding (receptive) or expressing thoughts (expressive) effectively.
- Cognitive-communication skills: Support children with attention, memory, and problem-solving difficulties, often related to developmental or neurological conditions.
- Voice disorders: Treat children with vocal issues such as hoarseness, breathiness, or loss of voice, often linked to misuse or overuse of the vocal cords.
- Care-team training: Train and support the child’s care team (including family members, teachers, and other professionals) to use AAC systems and/or communicate more effectively with the child, ensuring consistency and promoting communication.
